Our classes design projects

This faculty offers a diverse range of courses at GRC Penshurst Girls Campus. Students are provided the opportunity to explore a variety of materials and technologies and use the design process to develop their own creative solutions to real life problems. Both individual and group practical design projects are undertaken in all courses. Students are encouraged to apply innovative thinking and creativity.

Essential life skills such as team work, problem solving, communication, time management and organisational skills underpin all Technology design projects.

This subject caters to the gifted and talented student as they are able to develop and show innovation and creativity in the design projects. Year 7 Technology offers a selected gifted and talented class who are provided the opportunity to undertake a wide range of challenging projects. The competitive arena awaits students with the chance to excel in the Australasian Computer competition.

Years 7 and 8 (Stage 4) Mandatory Technology - 200 hours
The Mandatory Technology course provides the students the opportunity to develop creative and innovative solutions to real problems using design processes that assist in gaining an understanding of the factors that influence design.

Students learn about technology by undertaking design projects in the areas of built environments, products and information/communications. They explore a range of materials and use a variety of tools, techniques and equipment to transform these materials.

Students complete six units from different context areas over two years using different equipment, materials and technologies. Students incorporate computing skills, using appropriate software, in all units.

For each design project, students will develop a design portfolio, journal or diary that provides ongoing evidence of the decisions made, modifications undertaken and evaluation, throughout the design process.

Year 7 have a dedicated Computing Skills lesson each fortnight where the focus is on developing skills in word processing, spreadsheets and databases. These skills can be applied across the curriculum and is seen as an essential foundation for the Computing Skills Testing undertaken in Year 10.

Following an excursion to Luna Park, Year 7 completes an assignment on the factors affecting design.

Year 8
Food and Graphic Technology - Graphic Design - This unit focuses on the eating patterns of different cultures. Students will research one culture of their choice and prepare a PowerPoint presentation to the class on this culture. Students will design a menu for a restaurant based on this culture. In pairs, students will prepare a variety of dishes from different cultures.

TAS 5.2 TAS 5.1

Textile and Information Technology - Interior Design - Students develop skills in decorating fabric such as patchwork, appliqué, fantasy, embroidery and ink jet iron on transfer printing. They will use these skills to design and construct a unique cushion for one part of their environment. They must make decisions on the shape, size, fabric and techniques of the cushion design. They must consider the functional and aesthetic requirements and elements and principles of design.

Media, Timber and Information Technology - Digital Media Design - Students work independently in this unit and develop skills in using the workshop machinery to design and construct an original mirror frame using plantation pine timber. They use the software, Dreamweaver to create a website designed for the home handyman. The website is to show the steps in constructing the mirror frame the students constructed in the workshop. The website should focus on wood and the environment.

Years 9 and 10 (Stage 5) Electives - 100 and 200 hour courses
Food Technology 200 hour course

This is an elective course offered in Years 9 and 10. Throughout this course students undertake practical design projects within focus areas. It is an in-depth course dealing with contemporary, nutritional and food industry issues.

Students undertake study in the following units of work: Food in Australia, Food Selection and Health, Food Trends, Food for Special Occasions, Food Product Development and Food Service and Catering.

Students are given the opportunity to develop exceptional food preparation skills and a comprehensive understanding of how the food industry operates. Practical activities are an integral part of the course and students often cater for special occasions such as Presentation Evenings and Year 10 Graduation Ceremonies.

Food Technology 100 hour course
The Food Technology 100 hour course is only offered in Year 9. The emphasis of this course is practical activities which develop student's skills and confidence when planning, preparing and presenting food. Contemporary and topical food issues are covered such as food trends, food styling and photography. Students are encouraged to work creatively with food and develop an awareness of issues surrounding food such as cultural practices and sensitivities, food innovations, entertaining with food and media and food.

Students are given activities to develop and apply their computer skills. Student laptops are consistently used to access the most current information (wireless connection is available in the kitchens), investigate topics covered, record findings and even edit, manipulate and publish food photography after preparing and styling food.

TAS 9.2TAS 9.3TAS 9.1TAS 9.4

Textiles Technology 200 hour course
This is an elective course offered in Years 9 and 10. Practical project work and hands on practical experimentation form a major part of the course providing students with the opportunity of developing skills in the manipulation and use of textile materials, equipment and techniques. ICT skills are incorporated into activities.

Areas of study include Fashion Designers, Elements and Principles of Design, Properties and Performance of textiles, Textile Arts in different cultures, Creative Construction Techniques, Dyeing and Printing and Theatre Arts. Examples of products include skirts, shirts, jackets, creative corsets for a costume and wall hangings.

Students document their work in a design portfolio, showing the design development and testing and evaluating of their ideas. Students are able to showcase their work in a fashion parade. Students view the Year 12 HSC Texstyle Display and have hands on experience with decorative colouring techniques.

Information and Software Technology (Year 9 & 10) 100 hour & 200 hour course
This is an elective course offered in Years 9 and 10. Students will study the practical and theoretical aspects of computing. People can expect to work and live in environments requiring highly developed levels of computing and technological literacy. Current technologies are becoming obsolete at a rapid rate and new generations will need to be flexible to accommodate changes as they emerge. It is important that students learn about, choose and use appropriate information and software technology and develop an informed awareness of its capacities, scope, limitations and implications. Technological competence in the rapidly evolving area of information and software technology will require lifelong learning.

The study of IST assists students to develop the knowledge, understanding and skills to solve problems in real life contexts. Through experiential and collaborative tasks, students engage in processes of analysing, designing, producing, testing, documenting, implementing and evaluating information and software technology-based solutions.

Units studied include: Digital Media, Authoring and Multimedia, Database Design, Internet and Website Development, Simulation and Modelling and Software Development and Programming.

The software which is used to cover these topics include: Microsoft OneNote, Excel, Access, PowerPoint and Publisher as well as Adobe Flash, Fireworks, Dreamweaver, Photoshop Elements and Premiere Elements. All of this software is available on the students' laptops.
